Established
by Her Majesty the Queen Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck with the
vision to expand the scope of the charity work that Her Majesty
has personally initiated throughout Bhutan, the Tarayana Foundation
- a registered charity and non-profit organization is based in
Thimphu, Bhutan. The Crown Prince Dasho Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck
formally launched the Tarayana Foundation on 4th May 2003 coinciding
with the 3rd day of the 3rd month of the Water Female Sheep Year.
The aims
and objectives of the foundation are to help vulnerable individuals
achieve greater economic security by providing maintenance allowances
for people living in difficult circumstances to tide them over
a crisis, and providing basic maintenance grants for students
who lack support and care and are in disadvantaged circumstances.
The Foundation provides modest expenses towards uniforms, books
and stationery to poor students, sponsors modest individual
expenses for treatment and incidental costs for medical care,
promotes artisan skills and generate income in poor communities
through sales of crafts at the folk craft houses. The Foundation
aims to establish three folk craft houses in three regions of
the country containing curatorial acquisitions to provide education
and knowledge to visitors and impart skills to prospective crafts
persons within those communities.
